Colorado's protection-order process moves on a compressed timeline: a Temporary Protection Order can be entered ex parte the same day a petition is filed, with a return hearing typically set within 14 days. At that hearing, the court decides whether to make the order permanent — and a Permanent Protection Order can last indefinitely. Because the standard at the return hearing is preponderance of the evidence, not the criminal beyond-a-reasonable-doubt standard, even a relatively thin case can result in a lasting order if it goes unanswered.
